Tenant Advice & Referral

Are you having problems with your landlord? Do you have questions about your rights as a tenant? OTU is here to help! We have twice-monthly Zoom advice hours, operate an information & referral line, and are available for questions at the Oakland Public Library.

VIRTUAL ADVICE HOURS

Counselors from OTU provide virtual tenant advice hours for Oakland tenants from 3:00–5:00 PM on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month via Zoom. To register, please visit http://bit.ly/otuadvice and fill out the questionnaire. For those who want to register but do not have access to email, call (510) 704-5276, say you are registering for Virtual Tenant Advice Hours, and leave your full name, phone number and date of the session you wish to attend. You will be called prior to the session and provided with the dial-in information. Tenants will be helped on a first-come first-served basis, although we reserve the right to help Oakland tenants before non-Oakland tenants. Please be advised this is not a private consultation.

OTU AT THE OAKLAND LIBRARY

OTU members are also available for questions at the Oakland Public Library Main Branch on the first Sunday of each month from 3:00–5:00 pm at the Veteran's Center in the main lobby. To schedule a consultation  call or email us at 510-704-5276 or help@oaklandtenantsunion.org. Please indicate one of the following times: 3:15 PM, 3:45 PM, or 4:15 PM. Please be advised this is not a private consultation.

Terms & Conditions

OTU has a policy of not advising landlords or matters regarding disputes between tenants, unless it is between a master tenant and subtenant. For issues between co-tenants or neighbors, we encourage the tenants to talk to each other or would refer them to a local mediation group.
OTU advisors reserve the right to prohibit individual tenants from further contact with OTU if they communicate with advisors, or fellow tenants in public advice sessions, in a disrespectful or abusive manner. Appeals or inquiries about any specific prohibition will be considered by the Education & Counseling Committee. Complaints about the actions of individual OTU advisors will also be directed to the Education & Counseling Committee.
The Oakland Tenants Union strongly opposes racist and discriminatory actions by landlords against tenants, especially those imposed to boost profits, divide tenant communities, or retaliate against tenant organization., or to retaliate against tenants asserting their rights. Similarly, OTU counselors reserve the right to correct racist or discriminatory language used by tenants in our meetings, online clinics, or phone sessions. We also reserve the right to refuse assistance to anyone who will not refrain from the use of racist or discriminatory language.
